Funny sales emails help you to break the ice with your potential customer and make him or her buy your product in a very unconventional way. Prospects nowadays are busier than ever before – they get bombed by hundreds of letters per day. A funny sales email with a humorous subject line will make your prospects open and read your email instead of the other 99.
Here is what you need to know about how to write funny sales emails that capture your prospect’s attention:
1. Don’t be offensive
If your joke goes too far it may offend your audience. If you have a subject line or a joke that might be perceived contradictory – don’t send it. Always remember that humor is subjective so it can be risky. Better ask your colleague or friend to make sure you’re not crossing the line. Also, a good idea is to show you funny sales emails to your friends just to make sure they truly are funny.
Here is a great example of an email that I got from SumoMe instead of blaming me for not responding to his emails makes fun about possible ways of helping.

2. Don’t make yourself appear incompetent
Sales humor at your own expense is safe, but don’t make yourself appear incompetent. You can joke about your clothes but never make yourself or your company perceived as not high-quality. The point is to make jokes about something neutral and not make fun of you or recipient.
You can even joke about yourself to seem more professional and actually competent. A great example of such email I just got from SumoMe:
I’m not a computer sending emails at random. =) I personally looked at your site before reaching out.
Why? I’d hate for you to miss out on meeting Bar, our #1 Sumo expert.
He will share his screen and show exactly where your site is missing out on sales.
Trust me, every person I intro thanks me with chocolates (I’m getting fat).

The author of this message makes fun of himself telling that he is getting fat but here it is a sign of his competence. And this is very effective.
3. Humor is simply another tool
Humor is just another option, don’t forget that your email should have valuable content as well. Humor adds value but is not the only thing your prospects want to see. Otherwise you will be very fun and they will like you but still, your sales process will not be that successful.
A great example of such email has Close.io and their follow-up email:
This video that Close.io inserts into their follow-up emails is hilarious but it also brings value to recipients. They have a straight message – asking people to make a call.
4. Connect your funny sales emails with famous people or TV shows
Humor in sales emails is very subjective. In fact, any humor anywhere is subjective. Pablo Picasso said “Good artists copy, great artists still” so you can borrow a humor from TV shows or any other famous sources. There is no need in inventing something new – Jack Sparrow or Mr. Bean will serve you well in building contact with a prospect.
Here is a picture that Hubspot uses in their funny sales emails. Their email has nothing except greetings and this picture so it is straight to the point. You can use this in your sales emails to make your potential clients think twice about brushing you off. And even if they are truly not in a position to buy, they will certainly remember your humor when time comes.
Or this one from Hubspot uses the same tactics:
Hi [prospect name],
We haven’t been able to reschedule our [product] meeting and it’s reminding me a lot of when Rachel stood up Ross on Prom night …
Jokes aside, I was curious if you are still interested in putting time back on the calendar for us to discuss strategies for [achieving X goal or outcome].
Here’s my calendar if you’d like to discuss in more detail. If you’re simply not interested anymore, not a problem, just let me know so I can return my tuxedo. 🙂
5. Make the problems appear unimportant
Funny sales emails are the great tools for excuses. If you can not do something or you make wait your prospect wait for something he/she requested more than expected – try to make them not so angry by bringing a little bit of humor. Your funny sales emails will break the ice with not so happy customers.
